Full Stack Web Developer Learning Roadmap (Step by Step)

What to learn, in what order, and what to build at each stage.

Zenlithic Academy Team2 min read

Full stack development covers everything from what users see in the browser to the server and database behind it. The list of technologies can look endless, so this roadmap breaks it into stages. Finish each stage's project before moving on.

Stage 1: The web basics

Learn: HTML structure, CSS layout (Flexbox and Grid), responsive design, basic accessibility. Build: a responsive personal portfolio page.

Stage 2: JavaScript fundamentals

Learn: variables, functions, arrays and objects, DOM manipulation, events, fetch and promises, ES modules. Build: a to-do app that saves items in the browser and a weather page that calls a public API.

Stage 3: Git and the command line

Learn: commits, branches, pull requests, resolving conflicts, basic terminal commands. Build: put every project so far on GitHub with a clear README.

Stage 4: A frontend framework

Learn: React components, props and state, hooks, routing, forms, and TypeScript basics. Build: a multi-page app — for example a recipe or expense tracker — with forms and validation.

Stage 5: Backend development

Learn: Node.js, building REST APIs with Express or NestJS, authentication, input validation, error handling. Build: an API for your Stage 4 app with user sign-up and login.

Stage 6: Databases

Learn: SQL with PostgreSQL or MySQL, data modelling, relations, an ORM such as Prisma, migrations. Build: move your app's data from the browser into a real database.

Stage 7: Deployment and DevOps basics

Learn: environment variables, Docker basics, hosting a frontend and an API, HTTPS, simple CI that runs tests. Build: deploy your full app to the internet and share the link.

Stage 8: Professional skills

Learn: testing, security essentials, performance, writing clear documentation, working in a team with code reviews. Build: a capstone project of your own idea, end to end.

How long does it take?

With 10–15 focused hours a week, many learners reach a job-ready level in roughly 6–12 months. Progress depends far more on consistent practice and finished projects than on the number of courses completed.
